Introduction

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a common mental retardation syndrome characterized by anxiety and altered social behaviors. This study explores the potential of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to address these symptoms. Using Fmr1 knockout mice a model for FXS the researchers examined the impact of HBOT on anxiety-related and social behaviors. The results showed that HBOT-treated mice exhibited more thigmotaxis an indication of increased anxiety in the open field test. However in the elevated plus maze test these mice demonstrated enhanced motor activity and fewer anxiety-related behaviors compared to control mice. The social behaviors were evaluated using the three-chambered social approach test. Results revealed that HBOT group mice showed an increase in social interaction and decreased “social anxiety.” In the sociability test HBOT group mice made more approaches to an acquaintance mouse and in the social novelty preference test they made more approaches to a stranger mouse than the control group.

These findings indicate that HBOT can alter anxiety and social behaviors in a FXS mouse model suggesting it may be a potential treatment for Fragile X Syndrome.

Conclusion

In conclusion this study delved into the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on anxiety-related and social behaviors in Fmr1 knockout mice which serve as a model for Fragile X Syndrome (FXS). The results were quite promising showing that HBOT group mice exhibited different behaviors indicative of altered anxiety and improved social interaction. However the study did not specify the HBOT parameters and acknowledges no funding sources or conflicts of interest.
